If “To get a driver’s license” is the next thing in your TO DO list, then you‘ve come to the right place.

We are going to show you how to prepare yourself for the written test and pass it with confidence.

1. Get a copy of your state’s driver’s manual.

You can get it here or from any BDE (Beginner Driver Education) courses provider. This book will contain all the information that you may be tested on.
Read it chapter by chapter and make notes – this is the only way to ensure you are receiving all the information that you will need. Pay attention on the information about differences between G1, G2 and G full.

Make sure you understand how the demerit points system works and when a driver license can be suspended.

Check out the MTO web site for more information on how demerit points work in Ontario.

2. If the driver’s manual is too dry for you

and you find it difficult to work with it and recall the information, take a Drivers Education class. These classes are often not mandatory; however they will definitely provide a less dry way to cover the content of the Drivers Manual. The class room lessons will usually cover all the information from the book in a more interactive and interesting way providing you with the opportunity to build the associations and remember the course material.

One Chinese proverb says: “Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand”.

Remember, you need that knowledge not for the written test only – you need it for life! Safe driver knows the traffic laws and obeys the rules! Note: the Insurance Companies provide ONLY the Driving Course graduates with the special discount, but only when the certificate is issued by the MTO Registered Driving School.

3. Be prepared.

Work with your notes. Revisit any chapters you didn’t do well on. Know the traffic signs, when to pull over for emergency vehicles, speed limits in various zones, how to handle accidents, fines and demerit points. Have somebody quiz you or try online practice tests, they are free. You can get the list of free tools and Practice Written Test on this webpage. Don’t take your test before you are ready, you will have to pay the fee every time you take the test, plus the failing will make you more nervous the next time.

4.Choose a day to take your test.

Get enough sleep the night before. Eat a good breakfast. To eliminate stress, get all your paperwork together before hand. You may need to provide different documents in every state, make sure you have the check list. Also, when choosing a time, try to pick an odd time (the morning of a weekday, during working hours, etc.) so that the Ministry of Transportation branch will be the least crowded. This will lead to shorter wait time and much less stress.

Visit www.drivetest.ca to get more information about the written test.

5. Take your test!

Do not look around the room. Concentrate on your work. Do not rush but pay attention to timing.  Be sure you understand each question before answering. When possible, use the “Answer later” option on questions you are unsure about, you may think on them at the end. Make sure you check your work.

Good luck and remember: Driving is a privilege – not a right!

Be safe on the road!
