Safe Teen Driving – we can help to keep the roads safe

Facts on Safe Teen Driving!

Car crashes are the biggest killers towards teens. Car accidents take about 3,000 young lives every year. That rounds up to about 18 deaths a day that could be prevented. The social costs, human tragedy and productive years of life lost among youth from impairment-related road crashes are significant and 100% preventable! All new drivers, even the ‘’good kids’’ and the ‘’responsible’’ ones are more likely to be involved in a horrible crash due to the fact that they lack experience. The Safe Teen Driving is the one of the most discussed subjects in the media today. The good news is that you can make a difference by getting involved. Look below to find out how:

Proven Steps Save Lives

You can practice driving as often as possible with your teen. The more experience the better. Observe to make sure everyone in the car is always wearing their seat belts. Accidents tend to happen when there are more kids in the car, so make sure seat belts are always worn. Read the section “Know the Laws for Your Young Driver” on the MADD Canada web site for more information.

A Parent-Teen Driving Agreement Sets the Rules of the Road

Discuss in detail with your teen about rules of the road and car safety. Include why rules are important to follow and of course the consequences of breaking the rules. Studies show that your children listen to you, particularly when they know you their best interests at heart. It is never too early or too often to educate your teen on the risks of impaired driving. Share the stats and make sure they know how much danger they could be in if they choose to drive after drinking or doing drugs, or ride with a driver who’s been drinking or doing drugs.  A helpful thing you can do is to make a parent-teen driving agreement or contract. You can download a contract from MADD web site: http://www.madd.ca/media/docs/contract_for_life.pdf

Parents Must Be a Good Role Model

Don’t wait until your teen is old enough to drive to start modeling good driving behaviors. If you talk on the phone, text, speed or drive without your seat belt, so might your teen, so make sure you set a good role model for driving.

Other Parents Need This Information

Make sure you tell all friends and family about this information. It can save lives, and make both teens and parents more knowledge about road safety and its importance for the safe teen driving. For more information you can always visit http://www.madd.ca/madd2/en/services/youth_services_parents.html. Or take the next step and find information through Twitter or Facebook and share it with your friends and family.
