Make Safe & Sensible Use of Your Satnav – Infographic

Depending on you who ask, the satnav is either one of the greatest inventions of all time or an insufferable pain in the behind. While some drivers wonder how they ever got by in the days prior to satnavs, others regard them as a distracting nuisance. The reality of the situation is that the satnav is a fantastic accessory for drivers to be able to call upon, although drivers have a responsibility to ensure that they use it as an aid and nothing else.
Owning a satnav does not mean we can power down our minds when we drive. Your satnav can’t slow the car down for you if there’s a sudden need to brake, for instance if the vehicle in front of you drastically slows or if a person suddenly dashes across the road. Satnav users can also fall foul of tapping a destination into the device and thinking that the work is done. It is critical to check that the destination calculated by your satnav is the correct one, unlike the tourists in Italy who were looking for the holiday island of Capri and instead ended up in Carpi, an industrial town more than 650 kilometres away from their intended destination.
This infographic by Southside Motor Factors (www.smf.ie) dispenses some important advice on how to use your satnav safely and sensibly, as well as giving pointers on how best to position the device within your vehicle. It is all too easy to become lazy and sloppy in our driving when we have a satnav accompanying us, but the device is intended to free us of worrying about going the wrong way or missing a vital turn-off. To quote British comedian Andy Parsons, “It’s a gadget. You also have to use your brain.”
